How to Create a Habit

Wait a minute?! How to Create a Habit? Really? We are trying to break habits everyday and you want to share how to create a habit? That sounds like a bad thing.

Habits are learned and can be unlearned everyday. If you have a negative relationship with habits, think of this as how to create a habit of a positive. No focusing on negative, we are trying to increase our personal development and business, right? When you think of a habit, we tend to think of that in a negative light, but let’s shine some light on positive habits and how to create a habit that is better for yourself.

How to Create a Habit

Steven Covey defines a habit as the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire.

  • Skill is how to do it.
  • Desire is the motivation that makes you want to do it.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. – Aristotle

This is the essence of personal development and success. We have to know how to create a habit of success. That is my desire. To create positive habits to create my routine that will lead me to success. Top leaders have a routine!

Looking at the image, what is lacking for you to create a habit?

I’ll use myself as an example:

I say to myself – “I want to blog more often”. I want this to be something that I do regularly so that I can provide content to everyone and share things that I’m learning. So, why is this not a ‘habit’ for me yet? I said I want to, I know how to do it, and know why and what to do to write a blog. If I’m honest with myself, the knowledge and the skill does not go away, which brings it back to desire. Apparently I do not want to do it as much as I ‘think’ I do. It seems to be the common missing piece for many. As you are learning how to create a habit, this piece will be difficult as well because you are going to have to really want it!
